Laura White, American Cancer Society, currently Data Management Director. I
recently moved to this position from HR in order to put my HR skills to the test however I am finding that the HR hat is sewn to my head.
2. Tell us about what you do there
I oversee all of the data entry needs for our organization.
3. What is your favorite part of your job?
I love serving others and being able to solve problems with them.
4. How did you “get in to HR” and why?
I got into HR when I worked at Amsouth Bank. I worked in Branch Administration but the training department let me help with screening candidates.
5. What advice would you give to a person who is still “green” in HR?
Find a mentor! Create a circle of mentors! Find people who can help you grow while giving you positive and constructive feedback.
6. What’s your career goal in HR?
My goal is to continue to grow in whatever role I am in order to get business results.
7. Complete the following sentence… I know the day is going to be a struggle when…. my recruiter calls in sick. ugh
8. What is the weirdest question you have ever been asked by a candidate or employee?
How long do I have to work here to get the three year anniversary award?
9. What do you say to a candidate to politely turn them down for your position?
Thank you for your interest in this position and our organization. We have filled the position with someone who skill set more closely matches our need.
10. What was the last book you read? Would you recommend it? Why?
The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly. Looking for a way to show employees they are valuable....this book is excellent!
11. What is your favorite all time movie? Why?
Right now I will go with Secretariat. I love a true story and especially one about the drive of a woman.
12. You’ve just been granted a wish and can invite four people from any time period in history to dinner. Who would you invite and why?
Abe Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Mandisa (from American Idol) and Mary Beth Chapman. These are people who have either stood up for something or worked against incredible odds. Their legacy is overwhelming to me.
13. What is your favorite way to spend the weekend? Why?
With my husband and two kids (12 & 9). I love the ages my kids are at right now.
14. Are you a cat person or a dog person?
Cat, but I have a hamster named Fred, so we probably don't need a cat.
15. How long have you been a member of BSHRM?
2006, maybe.
16. Give us a brief summary about the committees you are heading up this year and how the membership can help you.
I am a member of the Salary Survey committee this year.
